Date: 8 March 2007
to 10 March 2007
Visitors to the Art Museum’s Treasures exhibition will have the opportunity to admire and appreciate the art of beading next week. On Thursday 8 and Friday 9 March, beaders from the Ilinge Women Crafters will demonstrate their beading skills in the museum’s Arts Hall from 10:00 – 16:00.
Based in New Brighton, Ilinge Women Crafters aim to maintain their traditional craft and alleviate poverty by teaching skills and providing a service that is needed. Formed in 1999 by five pensioners and five unemployed women, they specialize in beadwork, sewing and fabric painting. They will have a number of completed items on display.
The Treasures exhibition features exquisite examples of beadwork from the Eastern Cape and emphasizes the beauty of special items selected from the Museum’s collection, displaying them on their own as artworks. Items displayed include beautifully beaded vests, dramatic collar cascades, beaded skirts and aprons, wire-work sticks, anklets, cloaks and a variety of decorative pins.
When the exhibition ends on 18 March, the Art Museum will be closed to the public until July 2007 for renovations.
