Date: 26 March 2007
to 14 April 2007
It’s Easter time and the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum is inviting children, aged 7 to 10 and 11 to 15, to make and decorate papier mâché eggs in celebration of the Christian feast of Easter. Christians embrace the egg as a symbol of the resurrection or new life.
The decorated egg is a universal symbol and throughout the world, has been dyed, painted, adorned and decorated in celebration of its symbolic meanings. The word “easter” is associated with the Goddess of Spring and before the egg became closely entwined with the Christian festival it was honoured during many spring festival ceremonies. In pagan times the egg itself represented the rebirth of the earth.
The two day papier mâché workshops will be held at the Art Museum, 1 Park Drive, Port Elizabeth on the 9th and 10th of April for children aged 7 to 10 years and on the 12th and 13th April for the older group. The workshops run from 9:00 - 12:00 each day.
The cost of each workshop is R20 and includes all materials and light refreshment. Only a limited number of children can be accommodated in each workshop and to secure a place, early booking is advised. Call 041 5861030 to make a booking.
