Art Packs for International Museum Day

An ‘Art Cart’ continues to take workshops to schools and other venues while the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum is closed for renovations.
In celebration of International Museum Day on 18 May, the Art Cart will visit Missionvale Care Center on 17 May between 14:30 and 16:00. After the workshop, each child will receive a zip bag containing a range of art materials and implements, encouraging them to continue the pursuit of art excellence at home. “The Art Museum is committed to exposing children to the joys of making art through its educational programmes and outreach projects such as this one,’’ says Education Officer Jenny Fabbri.
Workshops were also held during the week at the Masifunde Sponsorship in Walmer, Sinethemba in Korsten and the Masikhulisane Youth Centre in Soweto on Sea. “Many of these children had never experienced the creative process which contributes to their overall enrichment and development. They thoroughly enjoyed the experience!” added Jenny.
International Museum Day - 18 May 2007
South African museums have been celebrating International Museum Day on 18 May for many years, an occasion initiated by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) at its general assembly in Moscow in 1977.
This year, ICOM-SA has urged museums in South Africa to celebrate 18 May 2007 by drawing attention both to the ICOM definition of a museum as
an institution in the service of society and of its development
and to the motto adopted in 1977
Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, co-operation and peace among peoples .
International Museum Day provides the opportunity for museum professionals to meet the public and alert them to the challenges that museums face.
